In brief. A poultry house suited to Morocco is more than a roof. Siting, orientation, shade, ventilation, drainage, water and workflow must perform as one system. This checklist is designed for planning around Oued Zem, but every construction project still requires local engineering, veterinary input and regulatory approval.
Design from the site, not from a catalogue
The right building starts with the land. FAO guidance highlights reliable water, access, drainage and separation from potential sources of nuisance or contamination. Around Oued Zem, a design must anticipate summer heat, large day-to-night changes, dust, prevailing winds and occasional heavy rain. Visiting the plot at different times and seasons reveals shade, standing water and wind corridors that a generic drawing will miss.
Moroccan rules govern sanitary distances, authorisation and facility requirements. Decree No. 2-04-684, implementing Law 49-99, sets a framework for the siting, hygiene and equipment of poultry farms. Checking the requirements with the relevant authorities and ONSSA therefore comes before ordering materials.
Reduce solar load
In a hot area, the aim is to limit prolonged sun on the larger walls and use helpful winds without exposing hens to a harsh draught. The exact orientation depends on topography and measured local wind; a rule of thumb is not a site study. Roof overhangs, awnings, light exterior finishes and shaded ground around the house reduce heat gain. Roof insulation can limit radiant heat, provided it is protected from birds, insects and moisture.
Move air where the birds are
Ventilation removes heat, moisture, dust and gases. A large opening is not automatically effective: air needs to pass through occupied zones rather than leaving hot pockets. Inlets and outlets are screened against wild birds and rodents without being blocked. A mechanical system is sized for maximum stocking and the hot season. Backup power, alarms and a written failure procedure belong in the design.
Bird response complements sensors. The UK laying-hen code identifies panting, open beaks and visible respiratory movement as heat-stress indicators. During hot weather, air throughput, distribution and speed should be checked at bird level. A reading near the roof does not necessarily describe conditions on litter or perches.
Build practical water, feed and people flows
Water lines must be reachable for inspection, flushing and repair. Storage and pumps need capacity for peak demand and a backup route. Feed bins or bags are protected from moisture, pests and wild birds. Staff, eggs, feed, litter, waste and mortality should cross as little as possible. A visible boundary between outside and clean working areas makes biosecurity easier to follow.
Create functional spaces for hens
The plan includes quiet nests, dry friable litter, reachable perches and evenly distributed feed and water. EFSA recommends friable litter and elevated platforms or perches that support simultaneous resting. Morocco’s 2024 specification for the officially recognised free-range label includes, for operators using that specific label, a maximum of nine laying hens per square metre indoors, a dedicated outdoor range for each house and other conditions. These figures do not establish that any farm is certified; that requires formal documentation.
Design for cleaning before choosing finishes
A durable washable floor, suitable falls, accessible corners, non-absorbent surfaces in critical areas and correctly placed drains reduce cleaning time. Dirty water must not flow back towards the house or contaminate storage. Doors need to admit equipment without leaving pest entry gaps. Mortality and waste require a separate, secure area that follows sanitary rules.
Ventilation, insulation and drainage also affect litter. Persistent damp areas should lead to a review of leaks, condensation, stocking, roof run-off and airflow rather than simply adding dry material over the top.
Commission the empty house
Before placement, the team tests water flow at line ends, backup autonomy, fans, alarms, light, gates and the cleaning sequence. An emergency plan covers power or water failure, fire, extreme heat and suspected disease. The theoretical stocking capacity is accepted only after the usable area and real equipment performance have been verified.
A commissioning record should name the person who performed each test, the measured result and any correction. Repeating selected tests under hot, windy and rainy conditions is more informative than a single calm-day check. Drawings, equipment manuals and emergency contacts remain accessible to staff rather than locked in a contractor’s file.
Limits of this checklist
Climate varies across Morocco and from one plot to another. Natural, mechanical or mixed ventilation, stocking and equipment dimensions require professional calculations.
