Understand what heat changes
A hen cannot cool itself by sweating in the way a person can. As environmental heat rises, it increases respiration, may hold wings away from its body, moves less and may eat less. FAO material describes declining feed intake and increasing water use as temperature rises. Egg output, weight and shell can be affected, although the same changes can have other causes.
Risk depends on temperature, humidity, air speed, radiant heat, stocking, feather cover and adaptation. A single thermometer is therefore not enough. Sensors and observation at bird level belong together.
Recognise escalation
The UK laying-hen code identifies panting, open beaks, visible respiratory movement and reduced motivation to move or feed. As risk increases, hens may crowd around airflow and water. Weakness, loss of balance or mortality is an emergency requiring veterinary involvement.
Hot-weather rounds are calm so staff do not add disturbance. Signs, time, temperature, humidity, water use and actions are recorded. The timeline supports a better plan after the event.
Secure water before summer
Storage, pumps, filters, end-of-line flow and power autonomy are tested. Water in a tank does not guarantee water at every drinker. Lines are maintained under a procedure that protects quality. Backup water, connectors and tools are kept ready rather than searched for during an alert.
Electrolytes or supplements are not an automatic recipe. Composition, concentration and compatibility with water, medicines or vaccines require veterinary or nutrition advice.
Move air without creating a new hazard
Before summer, inlets, screens and fans are cleaned and their real performance is checked. Air should reach hens and be distributed through the house. UK guidance recommends particular attention to throughput, distribution and speed at bird level in hot weather.
Mechanical ventilation requires an alarm and backup power. The procedure names who starts the generator, which emergency openings are used and who calls technical support. Openings still need protection from wild birds and pests.
Reduce solar and internal heat
Roof and wall shade, suitable insulation, light exterior surfaces and clear airflow paths limit heat gain. Non-urgent handling, catching and deliveries are avoided at the hottest time. Lighting and heat-generating equipment are managed without compromising safety or the flock’s light programme.
Adjust operations, not the diet by guesswork
Feed timing may be reviewed so birds can eat in cooler periods, but any change should match the flock programme and nutrition advice. Lower intake can reduce nutrient supply. Water, feed, egg output and egg weight are followed together.
Write graduated alert levels
The plan distinguishes weather watch, pre-alert, alert and emergency. Each level defines round frequency, permitted settings, responsible staff, backup checks and veterinary contacts. Triggers are set for the actual house and flock. Copying a temperature from the internet without humidity and air speed can be unsafe.
Afterwards, the team compares the first panting, line flow, maximum conditions, alert duration and recovery. The review turns an emergency into a measurable improvement and identifies equipment to strengthen before the next hot season.
A pre-summer drill
Before the hottest period, staff simulate a power loss while the house is empty or under conditions approved by the responsible professionals. They confirm that the alarm reaches the right people, the generator starts, fuel is usable, emergency openings work and water pressure returns. The time for each step is recorded. No drill should put birds at risk; where a live test is unsafe, individual components are tested separately.
The inventory includes spare belts or fuses specified by the equipment supplier, clean filters, approved tools, portable lights and current phone numbers. Shade and roof condition are inspected, while vegetation or stored material that obstructs airflow is removed. Weather alerts are assigned to a named person, including weekends.
Recovery continues after the temperature falls
The flock is observed through the following hours and days for water and feed use, mortality, egg output and shell changes. Settings return gradually under the farm protocol. Any severe sign or ongoing decline receives veterinary assessment rather than being dismissed as a delayed heat effect.
