In brief. Flock welfare cannot be judged from an attractive photograph or one housing measurement. It is assessed through the hens: mortality, feather cover, wounds, movement, breathing, resource access, behaviour and use of space. Indicators need a repeatable method and a clear route to corrective action.

Measure the outcome for the bird

A feeder that meets a drawing does not prove every hen can use it. A perch in the house does not prove it is reachable. Animal-based measures show the combined outcome of housing, management and health. EFSA identifies total on-farm mortality, feather damage, wounds and keel-bone fractures among important measures for laying hens.

These indicators have limitations. One injury can have several causes, and some conditions are hard to identify without competent handling. Their strength comes from a consistent protocol, a trend over time and interpretation with the veterinarian.

Activity, alertness and distribution

During a calm round, a flock normally displays a range of behaviours appropriate to the time: eating, drinking, exploring, resting, preening or dustbathing. Staff watch distribution. Crowding by one drinker may point to failure elsewhere; a zone repeatedly avoided may be hot, damp, draughty or too bright.

Response to people also matters. General panic, collisions or unusual immobility warrant review of handling, previous experience and the environment. The goal is not identical behaviour from every bird, but lower fear and injury risk.

Feathers, skin, feet and movement

Feather condition is scored at several body sites in a representative sample. Worn, broken or missing feathers may relate to pecking, abrasion or other causes. Wounds need prompt attention. Feet, claws and walking are observed, and reluctance to use perches can indicate pain or poor design.

Keel-bone health is important, but assessment requires training so handling does not harm the hen and findings are interpreted properly. Measures collected later at the processing plant may complement farm records.

Breathing and thermal comfort

Panting, open beaks, wings held away from the body and reduced movement can signal heat stress. UK guidance recommends checking air throughput, distribution and speed at bird level in hot weather. Persistent huddling can indicate cold discomfort. Sensors describe the environment; bird response tells whether it is working for the flock.

Access to water, feed and rest

Staff count usable points and watch for queues, competition and birds pushed away. Total consumption can look normal while a subgroup struggles to reach resources. Perch occupancy around dusk demonstrates accessibility. Dry friable litter supports the comfort and exploratory behaviour emphasised by EFSA.

Production and mortality are alerts, not a complete score

Egg output, egg weight, shell changes and consumption add information, but cannot alone establish welfare. Mortality is recorded daily and causes are investigated. Alert thresholds should be agreed with the veterinarian for the flock’s age and history. A sudden change receives attention even if the number remains below a generic benchmark.

Build a usable scoring sheet

A short form defines the method, sample size, score descriptions, time and trained observer. Reference images can improve consistency, provided records are protected and control images are not repurposed as marketing. Results carry actions and deadlines: fix a leak now, review a perch, investigate rising wounds or call the veterinarian.

Recording quality is itself checked. Two observers can score the same sample separately and compare results. If disagreement is large, definitions and training need revision before the farm concludes that welfare has improved or declined.

Sample without choosing only the easy birds

A representative method covers different parts of the house and does not select only birds nearest the aisle. Observation can begin without handling, followed by any trained physical checks included in the veterinary plan. Time, light and flock activity are recorded because scores collected at different moments may not be comparable.

The form should distinguish an individual urgent case from a flock trend. An injured hen needs immediate care even if prevalence is low. A modest but repeated rise in feather damage may call for an environmental investigation before serious wounds appear. Actions are recorded alongside results so the next review can judge response, not just score.

Link animal and resource measures

Animal findings are mapped against litter, perches, nest use, drinker flow, temperature and staff routines. This does not prove causation, but it helps create testable hypotheses. A change is introduced cautiously, with veterinary oversight where needed, and the same indicators are measured again.

Communicate without welfare washing

A photograph of hens outside does not prove permanent range access, health or certification. Regulated terms and labels require evidence. Mamati should publish only verified, dated practices. This article is a general method, not an audit or certification of the farm.
