In brief. For a laying flock, water, feed and climate cannot be managed separately. A balanced ration achieves little if water flow fails, heat suppresses intake or equipment creates competition. Sound management uses feed formulated for the flock stage, monitored water, accessible equipment and daily trends rather than isolated numbers.

Water is the first feed

A hen must be able to drink at any time. FAO material notes that a layer can consume up to around a quarter of a litre per day under some conditions, but this is not a fixed allowance. Temperature, humidity, age, diet, production and the drinker system can change consumption substantially. In heat, water use rises while feed intake may fall. The flock’s own daily trend is therefore more useful than a generic target.

A sudden fall can indicate restricted pressure, a blocked filter, less palatable water or a health problem. A jump can reflect heat or a leak. The number is a signal to inspect, not an automatic diagnosis.

Protect water quality all the way to the beak

Safety does not end at the source. Tanks, pipes and drinkers can accumulate biofilm or become contaminated by dust and droppings. USDA guidance recommends contained water sources where possible, bacteriological testing of water used inside poultry houses and a written treatment procedure. Treatment should be chosen with expert advice because the wrong product or concentration can fail, harm equipment or interfere with vaccines delivered through water.

In Morocco, when a well is used, Decree No. 2-04-684 requires bacteriological and chemical testing at least once a year and corrective measures for non-compliance. Risk, seasonal change or an unexplained technical result may justify more frequent checks.

Use a ration formulated for the production stage

A growing pullet and a laying hen do not have identical needs. Feed is formulated for age, body weight, production and strain, balancing energy, amino acids, minerals and vitamins. Calcium is essential to shell formation, but adding one ingredient without calculation can unbalance the ration. Formulation and changes belong with an avian nutritionist and the supplier’s specification.

Yolk colour and egg size do not reveal overall feed quality. A “natural” description also cannot replace composition, ingredient traceability and control. Any nutrition claim about the final eggs needs suitable analysis and compliant labelling.

Distribute without creating hidden competition

Feeders and drinkers are spread so hens can reach them without excessive crowding. FAO guidance for confined systems stresses constant access and even equipment distribution. Height is adjusted to the birds to reduce wastage and contamination. The far end of a line is checked, not only the convenient point by the entrance.

Diet changes are planned. A sudden switch in taste, particle size or presentation can reduce intake. Feed is dated, stored dry and protected from pests, with first-in-first-out stock rotation. Spills are cleaned promptly because they attract rodents and wild birds.

Read water, feed and egg data together

The daily record brings together water use, feed delivered, egg numbers and weight, mortality, maximum temperature and observations. Thin shells or reduced production can have several causes. Correcting one nutrient from one visible sign risks making the ration worse. The veterinarian and nutritionist interpret the series in the context of age, environment and analysis.

Changes should be documented with date, batch and reason. That makes it possible to judge whether a correction worked rather than relying on memory.

Prepare for hot weather

Water storage, line flow and ventilation are tested before a heatwave. Clean water remains available, but electrolytes, minerals or feed schedules are not improvised. They require advice from the professionals responsible for the flock. A written plan lists contacts, trigger points, backup power and the checks to record.

A weekly equipment and stock audit

In addition to daily rounds, a scheduled weekly check follows water from source to the last drinker. It reviews tank covers, filters, pressure, line supports, leaks and the sanitation log. A measured container and stopwatch can confirm flow at representative points if the equipment supplier’s method permits. Any trend away from the normal result is corrected before it becomes a flock-wide interruption.

Feed control compares physical stock with deliveries and use. Batch labels remain readable, storage stays dry, and damaged bags or evidence of pests are isolated. The team checks that the feed being distributed matches the flock stage and that no previous product remains in a bin or transfer line. When samples are retained under the farm plan, they are identified by batch and protected from contamination.

Questions to ask before changing anything

Is the change seen in every house or one line? Did weather, feed batch, medication, light or equipment change at the same time? Are measurements reliable? Has a veterinarian reviewed clinical signs? Answering these questions helps avoid an expensive “correction” based on coincidence.
